The Father Over All

There is one body and one Spirit, just as you were called to one hope at your calling; one Lord, one faith, one baptism, one God and Father of all, who is above all and through all and in all.

Ephesians 4:4-6 (CSB)

God the Father is over all. That is part of His nature that must not be mistaken. The apostle Paul notes that there is “one God and Father of all.” The Lord is Father over all because He is one God. There is no other God but the Lord. As the one God, the Creator God, He is above everything, has dominion over everything, and reigns over all. Nothing has power over the Lord. Likewise, the Lord is the Father of all because of His role as Creator.

The apostle declared that the Father is above all. Paul’s statement reaffirms the reign of the Lord as the ultimate reign. The Lord has all authority. He is above all in nature, above all in character, and above all in power. His holiness reveals His set apart nature. When we declare that the Lord is high and holy, we acknowledge He is Lord over all, including the Lord over every portion of our lives.

Paul stated that the Father is through all. The Lord is working through all moments and circumstances. When we state that the Lord is with us, that he strengthens us, and that He is at work through us we affirm that the Lord is at work through the events and activities that are going on around us. Has there ever been a moment in your life when you wondered what was occurring, only to find out later that the Lord was working for His purpose in your life? That is the Lord working through all.

The Lord is the Father over all of creation. He is over the universe. The Lord is the one who sustains us, leads us, and strengthens us. The Father does this by being with us. The Father is not a puppet master lording over us but is a loving Father who is sovereign and is, over all as an extension of His love. The Father is constantly at work around us, in us, and is over all.
