The Necessity to Know the Word
Jesus answered them, “You are mistaken, because you don’t know the Scriptures or the power of God. For in the resurrection they neither marry not are given in marriage but are like angels in heaven.”
Matthew 22:29-30 (CSB)
We must know the Word of God. Without it, we fail to understand the truth necessary for living faithfully before the Lord. We miss the truth about our true condition and the gift of eternal life through faith in Jesus Christ. We must know the Word because it is God's divinely inspired, inerrant, and infallible revelation to us. Therefore, if we desire to understand the ways and will of the Lord, we must know His Word.
The Word of the Lord reveals the power of God. Scripture illustrates the omnipotent nature of the Lord. The Word recounts the moments when the Lord acted with power to create and deliver. We find in Scripture instances where the Lord displayed His immense power by working in the lives of saints in the past. When we genuinely know the Word of God, we can find encouragement in knowing that the all-powerful Lord who worked in the lives of saints before us is the same God who actively works in our lives today. Therefore, Scripture serves as a catalyst for encouragement in our walk with the Lord.
The Word of the Lord speaks to us about God's promises. When we live in hope, we trust in the promises and presence of the Lord. The Word of God offers us many promises that encourage obedience to the Lord and inspire us to live in true hope. When we fail to truly understand Scripture, we miss the promises of the Lord and consequently lose sight of the ultimate blessing that comes through faith in Christ. Therefore, we must authentically know God’s Word to live encouraged and maintain genuine hope.
We must truly know the Word of God and not merely be familiar with it. When you are familiar with someone, you know their name and perhaps a bit about them, but you do not truly understand them as a friend or as an individual. When you know a friend, you comprehend what drives them, and you share a genuine relationship with them. The same applies to God’s Word. You can have knowledge of Scripture or its stories but still fail to know the Word of God intimately and deeply. We must strive to understand the Word profoundly.
