The Sufficiency of the Word of God

I rejoice in the way revealed by your decrees as much as in all riches. I will meditate on your precepts and think about your ways. I will delight in your statutes; I will not forget your word.

Psalm 119:14-16(CSB)

The concept of the sufficiency of the Word of God means that God’s Word includes all that we need to know from the Lord for salvation, trusting Him faithfully, and obeying His commands. When we speak to the sufficiency of Scripture, we declare that God’s Word provides the needed guidance to navigate the situations, dynamics, and events in this life.

When we hold to the sufficiency of Scripture, we must seek to grow in the truth of God’s Word by consistently and intentionally engaging it. The Psalmist declared this truth: “I will meditate on your precepts and think about your ways.” To meditate on God's precepts and think about His ways, we must be engaged in the Word of God. We must spend time knowing, growing in, and trusting it in every aspect of life.

Scripture contains everything we need to show us the ways and will of God for our lives. It may not speak to a specific moment or activity in life, but it provides the necessary guidance in morals and ethics to obey the Lord in faithfulness. The original authors would have never comprehended computers, social media, or current and future technology. But the authors did understand the expectations of the Lord to love Him with all our hearts, minds, souls, and strength and to love our neighbors as ourselves. This truth must become the guide of all interactions with others.

Scripture is sufficient to speak into every component of life in every age because it is timeless. The truths come from the eternal God who provides eternal truth. Thus, Scripture provides the truth for life and is sufficient to give truth for life.

When we understand Scripture as sufficient, we commit to living according to it and guard against adding to or subtracting from it. We seek to live out the truth of Scripture in faithfulness and obedience. We recognize that we must allow God’s Word to form the framework of our worldview. When we believe in the sufficiency of God’s Word, we begin to seek and see what it says concerning every moment in our lives.
