A Trustworthy Word

Read the Text: 2 Peter 1

Memorize the Text:

Humble yourselves, therefore, under the mighty hand of God, so that he may exalt you at the proper time, casting all your cares on him, because he cares about you.

(1 Peter 6:6-7, CSB)

Consider the Text: 2 Peter 1:16-21

The Bible is the Word of God. As the Word of God, the Bible is inerrant, infallible, and absolute truth. As followers of Christ, we must hold these truths about the Bible and understand and hold firm to the trustworthy nature of God's Word. The apostle Peter charged this truth to believers in 2 Peter. He called us to live a life resting on the truth found in God's Word and to approach the Word faithfully.

THE BIBLE HAS A TRUSTWORTHY FOUNDATION

The apostle Peter noted that the Bible rests on the foundation of the Lord. The Word of God did not come into existence as the gathering of myths, but instead, the Word of God came from the Lord himself using human authors. Therefore, the Bible has a trustworthy foundation because it is God's revelation on how eternal life can be received and how life must be grounded upon Christ. Thus, the delivery method and the message's purpose exist as foundational.

The foundational nature of Scripture exists because the message extends from the character and work of the Lord. Thus, we hold that the Bible is true and trustworthy because the Lord is truth, and He is trustworthy. We believe that the trustworthy nature of the Word of God directly links to the trustworthy nature of the Lord, and thus we must respond faithfully to this nature. Do you hold to the trustworthy nature of the Word of God? Do you trust the Word of God as absolute truth from the Lord?

THE BIBLE HAS A TRUSTWORTHY APPLICATION

The Bible has a trustworthy nature concerning the application of the truth. Peter declared that the Word of God serves as a light in the darkness and that the believer needs to pay attention to the truth. As a light, God's Word reveals what is against the truth. It exposes sin and the ways of the world that counter the truth. Thus, we need to hold that the Word of God provides the needed truth to live out life according to the ways of the Lord.

At the same time, the Word of God illuminates the truth against the darkness, and believers need to heed the truth. Unfortunately, the world offers various distractions that keep believers from applying the Word of God to life. Thus, Peter charged believers to pay attention. This call means that we need to give special attention to the truth and battle to hold on to the truth throughout daily life. We must come to the Word of God with a proper perspective and allow it to transform our lives to be more like Christ.

THE BIBLE HAS A TRUSTWORTHY CONFIRMATION

Peter noted that the Bible had confirmation of truth. Eyewitnesses served as confirmation of the work of Christ. They spoke to the glorious nature of the Lord and the victory of the resurrection. These eyewitnesses confirm the truth declared in the Word of God and provide further evidence of the truthful nature. The presence of eyewitnesses includes proof of the nature of God's Word and confirms the need to obey and engage the Word of God.

How you and I hold the Word of God reflects how we think about Jesus. When we submit to the Lord and His Word, we live in a manner that reflects His glory and greatness. We must attempt to live in a manner that reflects the trustworthy nature of the Word of God.
