The Majesty of God

Daily Old Testament Reading: Psalm 6, 8-10

Daily Focus Passage:Psalm 8

Majesty means "impressive stateliness, dignity, or beauty." The term also stands for the idea of "royal power." In Psalm 8, David describes the Lord's majesty and details humanity's dignity. When we consider the majesty of God, we must respond with awe, worship, and obedience. The concept of God's majesty reveals his impressive stateliness, royal power, and beauty. We understand the majesty of God in his strength, works, and very name.

THE MAJESTY OF HIS STRENGTH

The Lord is all-powerful and provides the needed strength for his children to carry out the task of his calling. The Lord's strength becomes known when he claims victory over the enemies and provides the needed power to stand during the storms and struggles of life. The strength of the Lord gives us reason to celebrate and praise him. We worship the Lord for his victory over our enemies and the foundation he provides. His strength reveals the majesty of his royal power as the Warrior King who fights the battle for us and secures the needed victories.

THE MAJESTY OF HIS WORKS

The majesty of the Lord is found in the beauty of his creativeness. The Lord is the great artist who creates a beautiful creation beyond our ability to comprehend and far past our imagination. We witness the beautiful works of the Lord as we gaze at the creation around us and see his glory and majesty manifested. The Psalmist mentions the majesty of the created stars and moons as an example of the majesty of the Great Artist. Creation is a great example of the majesty of the work of the Lord.

THE MAJESTY OF HIS NAME

The name of the Lord is majestic. The scribes making copies of the Old Testament would come to the name of the Lord and treat it with great reverence. This occurred because they recognized the majesty in the name of the Lord. The term carried such splendor that the people could not declare the name Yahweh. The name of God reminds us of the eternal character and work of the Lord. As he revealed himself to Moses, the Lord declared, "I was who I was, I am who I am, and I will be who I will be." God's name manifests his strength, works, and glory.

The majesty of the Lord drives our worship. This worship occurs when we announce the greatness of God through forms of worship. We sing of his greatness and shout his praises. We follow his leading and worship him in obedience. When you consider your life, do you respond to the majesty of the Lord? Do you rejoice in his royal power and strength? Do you stand in awe of his great works? Do you honor his great name? In the words of the Psalmist, “Lord, our Lord, how magnificent is your name throughout the earth!”
