People seek to find meaning and purpose in life. This search centers on a desire to find an identity. Often this search leaves us longing for something greater because we attempt to find happiness and fulfillment in this world's things, people, and events instead of the Lord. In Psalm 128, David clearly states that the foundation of finding purpose and joy in life comes in the faithfulness of walking in the ways of the Lord. So how do we walk in faithfulness?
WE MUST HAVE THE DESIRE TO SEEK HIS WAYS
The ability to walk in the ways of the Lord occurs from a desire to know the ways of the Lord. We cannot walk according to the ways of the Lord if we do not know or understand his ways. Thus, we must desire to grow in this knowledge and understanding. This development occurs as we strategically and intentionally engage God's Word. A proper desire seeks the Lord through the Word and in prayer because we recognize other sources leave us lacking. What do you desire in your life that helps you fulfill your purpose and identity? If it isn't the Lord, will you surrender your desire and seek to desire the Lord?
WE MUST TRUST HIS WORD TO PROVIDE HIS WAYS
We do not know the ways of the Lord without seeking the Word of God because the Word of God provides the revelation of God to his people. This means we must search the Word to understand God's ways. This understanding is trustworthy and true because it is the truth of the Lord. Thus, we must enter the state of trusting the Word of God. The evidence of trusting the Word comes as we walk of obedience. When can you know the truth and still reject to walk in it? When we trust it authentically, then our lives mirror the truth. Does your life reflect trusting the Word of God to provide the ways of God for your life? What steps can you take to follow the ways of the Lord better?
WE MUST WALK IN STEP WITH HIS WAYS
We all walk through life on various paths. Some paths form as we walk according to the desires of the flesh, while others form from the world's influence. As a follower of Christ, we must battle to reject these paths and walk on the path of the Lord. The path of the Lord occurs as we seek to plant our steps in the footsteps of Jesus. We strive to have our lives mirror Jesus and reflect his goodness. When we walk in the steps of his ways, we seek to have people see Jesus in us and seek to worship the Lord through faithful living. What paths tempt you to walk away from the paths of the Lord? How well are you stepping in the footsteps of Jesus?
We do not have the right as a child of God to walk in the ways of the flesh. We do not have the right to live in a manner that we “think” is correct. Instead, we must be sold out to the Lord and seek to follow in his footsteps each moment of life. We must seek his leading and trust His Word to provide guidance. We must stay in stride with the Lord and live in faithfulness.
