The Power of the Blood

Read the Text: Revelation 5

Memorize the Text:

Remember, then, what you have received and heard; keep it, and repent. If you are not alert, I will come like a thief, and you have no idea at what hour I will come upon you

(Revelation 3:3 CSB)

Consider the Text: Revelation 5:9-10

The apostle John discusses the opening of several scrolls in Revelation. In Revelation 5, he notes that Christ has the ability and power to open the scroll because of his work on the cross. Notice this declaration in Revelation 5:9-10:

And they said a new song:

You are worthy to take the scroll and to open its seals, because you were slaughtered and purchased people for God by your blood from every tribe and language and people and nation.

You made them a kingdom and priests to our God, and they will reign on earth.

The apostle revealed the payment of Christ’s blood, the purchase of Christ’s blood, and the power of Christ’s blood.

THE PAYMENT OF CHRIST’S BLOOD

The death of Christ on the cross and the spilling of blood provided a payment to deal with the debt caused by sin. Each of us lives plagued by sin and under the debt before the Lord caused by sin. The debt requires the payment of our life. Christ provided the payment of blood to deal with the debt of sin accrued by us. He provided the payment of life to provide the gift of everlasting life. The unique nature of Christ’s payment occurs in the eternal nature. Christ’s payment was more than enough to appease the debt owed once and for all. Thus, John reveals the holiness and work of Christ in which we must rejoice and find our hope.

THE PURCHASE OF CHRIST’S BLOOD

The pouring out of Christ’s blood covered the debt of sin and was purchased at the same time. Christ purchased the gift of salvation through His work on the cross and in the resurrection. This purchase then became the extended inclusive and exclusive gift of eternal life. Christ purchased salvation and offered it as a gift to all tribes, tongues, and nations. Thus, the gift was inclusive because of the availability to all. At the same time, the gift extended exclusively to those who responded in faith to Christ alone. Thus, Christ made an avenue to eternal life by purchasing salvation and offering the gift to all but only allowing those who receive the gift in faith to obtain the purchased gift. As a result, salvation is in Christ alone because He is the purchaser. We must find eternal life in Christ alone because we do not have the means to purchase salvation because Christ alone could pay the price and make salvation available.

THE POWER OF CHRIST’S BLOOD

The power of Christ’s blood carries the ability to change. When we respond to Christ alone for salvation, the power of Christ’s blood adjusts our position before the Lord. We no longer exist as rebels but as sons and daughters. As a result, we become part of God’s kingdom and enjoy the pleasure and goodness of that kingdom. The power of Christ’s blook transitions us from enemies working against the rule of the Lord to priests who serve the Lord and seek to expand His kingdom. Thus, when we live with the reality of the blood of Christ, we live in hope and certainty.
