How to Delight in God’s Word

Daily Old Testament Reading: Psalm 94, 119; 1 Kings 3

Daily Focus Passage: Psalm 119

When we delight in something, we find something greatly pleasing. We find pleasure in the object or moment. The concept of delighting in something means we find joy in it. In Psalm 119, the Psalmist notes that true joy comes when we delight in the Word of God. The same truth extends to us today. We must learn to delight in God's Word and enjoy the engagement. Psalm 119 provides many reasons why delighting in the Lord is critical, but here are four truths for us today that help us understand how to delight in God’s Word.

WALK ACCORDING TO THE LORD’S INSTRUCTION

The Word of God provides the guardrails and GPS for our walk with the Lord. The instructions of the Lord do not exist as suggestions for life, but instead, the instruction provides the expectation of the Lord for the life of the believer. This expectation comes as commands and imperatives for believers to follow as they journey in the Lord. The walk defined by the Word of God is a journey that exemplifies the Lord, brings him glory, and illuminates who he is to the world. When we walk by the instruction of the Lord, we demonstrate our faithfulness to him and serve him in obedience. When you consider your life, are you walking according to the instruction of the Lord, or are you seeking to define your walk?

SEEK THE LORD WITH ALL YOUR HEART

The Psalmist sought to seek the Lord with every component of life. He desired to find the ways of the Lord to allow the Word of God to infiltrate every area of life. Seeking with a complete heart means that the main priority in life is the pursuit of the Lord and that the other temptations that seek priority in our lives are minimized. We must seek the Lord with all our hearts and allow him to influence and transform every component of our hearts and life. When you consider pursuing Christ, do you seek him wholeheartedly?

COMMIT TO KEEP THE WAYS OF THE LORD

The Psalmist surrendered his life to the Word of the Lord and committed his life to keep the ways of the Lord. This commitment means one dedicates their life to following the leadership and ways of the Lord, even when it is costly. A commitment is not based on feeling or the moment but on total surrender to the Lord. When we commit to keep the ways of the Lord, we must surrender our entire life for the entirety of our lives. Thus, we commit to constantly seeking the Lord and striving to live out his ways. Are you genuinely committed to the Lord?

STORE GOD’S WORD IN YOUR HEART

The Psalmist declared the importance of storing the Word of God in your heart. When the Word is stored in the heart, we store it there as the treasure of our lives. We value it. We love it. Thus, we store it because we want it ever available in our lives. When the Word of God is stored in the heart, we can pull from the reserves as we navigate life daily. If we seek to delight in the Word, then we must store the Word in our hearts. How is the Word of God stored in your heart?
