When the Lord Builds

Daily Old Testament Reading: Psalm 111, 127; 1 Chronicles 28-29

Daily Focus Passage: Psalm 127

We strive to build our life on a foundation of success. The world defines success in terms of wealth, material, and fame. The world presses us to chase instant gratification and to attempt to build our success through our efforts. The Bible teaches us to fight the temptation to construct our life ourselves, submit to the will, ways, and Word of the Lord, and allow him to construct the house of our life. In Psalm 127, David challenges us to let the Lord build our lives. David provides four truths about the construction of our lives by the Lord.

THE LORD BUILDS IN HIS TIMING

The Lord constructs our lives in his timing and not in our timing. The Lord is not dependent upon our timeframe and is not limited by our demand on timing. Instead, the Lord builds in perfect timing because he is sovereign and in control. Thus, we must learn to trust the Lord’s timing in responding to dynamics in our lives. We must remember that the Lord’s timing is not limited because he is outside of time as eternal and is the Creator of time.

THE LORD BUILDS IN HIS WAY

The Lord drew the blueprints for our life, and he builds according to his plans and not our demands or plans. The Lord constructs for his purpose and to carry out his will. We do not understand how the Lord builds, but we must learn to enjoy the construction. We must learn to allow the Lord to work how he desires to approach, building and constructing our lives according to this will and for his purpose.

THE LORD BUILDS FOR HIS GLORY

The Lord constructs to bring glory to himself. The construction of people’s lives brings a way for the Lord to reveal his great power and work. As the Lord constructs lives, he reveals his greatness so people see his holiness and glory. The Lord constructs for his kingdom and his sake. The blessings we receive still exist for the glory of the Lord and not for the glory of us. We must trust that God’s work in us brings him glory.

THE LORD BUILDS IN HIS CERTAINTY

The Lord builds with certainty. The certainty of what the Lord constructs faces the storms of life and stands firm. What he builds endures, and what he constructs never fails. The certainty of the Lord means that we can trust that the life he builds in us is good, acceptable, and perfect (Romans 12). We must develop trust in the Lord’s work in our lives and hold that he will complete what he begins in us.

THE LORD MUST BUILD OUR LIVES

We must live in a manner that allows the Lord to construct our lives. We must not attempt to build our lives in our thoughts, ways, or desire, but instead, we must allow the Lord to make us piece by piece. This construction occurs as we develop in our spiritual walk with the understanding that we are the Temple (1 Corinthians 3:16-17) and that the foundation of this Temple must rest on Christ (Matthew 7:24-27). At the same time, we must learn to rest in the certainty that comes only from the Lord (John 10:28) and seek to serve for the glory of the Lord alone (Philippians 1:9-11). Thus, we must evaluate our lives to ensure we live a life constructed by the Lord.
